NEW YORK – Archbishop Demetrios of America issued an appeal today for immediate economic assistance to the suffering people in Greece, through a special Encyclical he sent on behalf of the Holy Eparchial Synod to the clergy, the parishes, the schools, the Philoptochos, Youth and affiliated organizations and to the Greek Orthodox Family in America.

Nashville, TN - These meetings were intended for all clergy and youth workers in the Central and Southern District parishes of the Metropolis of Detroit. Participants discussed the current youth ministry programs and events in the area. Among clergy present were His Eminence Metropolitan +NICHOLAS of Detroit, Fr. Gregory Hohnholt (Proistamenos of Holy Trinity in Nashville, TN - host parish), Fr. Stavros Ballas (Chattanooga, TN), Fr. Anthony Cook (Memphis, TN), Fr. Larry Legakis (Louisville, KY) and Fr. Parthenios Truner (Nashville, TN). Moderator was Eva Kokinos (Metropolis Youth Director). Following the Youth Ministry Meetings, Metropolitan Nicholas visited Presbytera Stella Sfikas at home. On Sunday, His Eminence attended the Divine Liturgy in the host parish.

Saturday, January 21, 2012, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas ordained Deacon Paul Truebenbach to the Holy Order of Priesthood at the Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Church in Cincinnati, OH. Also present were Reverend Fathers: Bill Cassis (Proistamenos), Constantine Efstathiu, Anastasios Gounaris, George Wilson and Larry Legakis. Fr. Truebenbach will serve as an Assistant Priest of this parish.

St. John GOYA 2011 "Holiday Hoops" Basketball Tournament

The St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church GOYA's annual basketball tournament entitled "Holiday Hoops" took place on December 27-29, 2011 at the Lutheran High School Northwest in Rochester Hills, MI. The "Holiday Hoops" Dinner Dance was held on the evening of December 28 at the Marriott Hotel in Troy, MI. Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit attended a few games and the dinner dance accompanied by members of his staff and Fr. Nicholas Kyritses (Proistamenos of St. John's), Fr. Stratton Dorozenski and Fr. Tom Michalos.

Financial sights are projecting, we are moving from “a golden age” of investments and economic growth (1982-2007) to a “grey age”. From nominal 12.8% returns to 2.8% returns. The next ten years, we may be going through 3 more recessions. With the baby boomers aging it may take to 2027 before returns get to golden age levels.

In the last 75 years the winning formula was more energy, more output, more people, more credit, and more promises as empty as they may be now. More doesn't work any longer.

On December 11-12, 2011, the Metropolis of Detroit held its annual Open House and Reception celebrating the nameday of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas. Sunday, December 11, the Metropolis was open to guests with refreshments available. Great Vespers in honor of our Chapel's Patron Saint, Spyridon the Wonderworker of Trymithous, was celebrated in the evening. On Monday, December 12, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Chapel for the Feast Day of St. Spyridon followed by a small reception.

NEW YORK – “Orthodoxy: An Unlimited Expression” was the topic of a lecture presented by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios yesterday Nov. 9 at Yale University’s Marquand Chapel.

Archbishop Demetrios was invited by Yale Divinity School to present this lecture at the start of a conference titled “Looking East: A Window on the Eastern Christian Traditions of Epiphany” and the art exhibition “People, Piety, and Sacred Power in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and Chairman of the Assembly presided at a doxology prayer service conducted in English, Greek, and the other languages of the participating churches. Following the service the hierarchs of the Assembly sat down for a farewell brunch of brotherly fellowship.
